A wooden motte and bailey castle was built in Chichester shortly after the Norman invasion, and it served as an administrative centre for the area.

Despite its initial importance, the castle was never upgraded from its wooden origins. It was in use as a gaol up until the the 13th century, and was even captured by the French in 1216, but was recaptured by the English the following year, after which it was destroyed.

The site was then given to an order of Greyfriars, who built a Priory nearby. Part of the priory, known as the Guildhall, is still in existence in the park today.

The castle mound is also still in existence, but is currently fenced off so is for viewing only. There is a cricket pitch nearby and the screens go right up to the edge of the fencing, making it difficult to get a proper view at this angle.

Priory Park these days is a lovely public space. The Guildhall building is used for events, and there is a play park just behind the castle mound, which was really busy on the August day we visited. It should be noted that Priory Park is a dog-free site, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your perspective.

The castle remains don't take long to view, and if the kids still want something to do after time at the park, then Chichester City Walls are a good way to pass some time. They are Roman in origin very well preserved. They make an interesting walk, and the time of our visit there was an owl trail across the city, including the vicinity of the walls which gave further interest for children.

Chichester is an attractive city will many shops, cafes and amenities. There are several city centre car parks and  train station, so it is easy to get to.
