If you are looking for an example of an ivy-clad ruin, Candleston Castle near Brigend certainly fits the bill. It is  located in woodland but very close to the sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr so offers the best of both worlds to the visitor.

This is a lovely 12th-14th century castle situated  in Oystermouth on the Gower Peninsular in South Wales. The setting in a public park with views across the bay make this a great place to visit for a day trip.

Situated on the bank of the River Ewenny, this small but picturesque castle makes an ideal visit, with lots of things to do in the surrounding area. The ancient stepping stones across the river are also popular, as are the horse riding stables next door.

Once a magnificent stronghold on the side of the River Tawe, today this castle is surrounded by modern-day Swansea. Building development on the castle site has seen its total footprint reduced, and the diverting of the Tawe means the remaining castle buildings are no longer next to the river.
